The definition of treatment resistant epilepsy includes three or more attempts at seizure control using conventional anticonvulsant agents. If you have patients or you know someone that has tried three or more seizure medications, this may be the time to consider cannabis medicine.
We have FDA approval for a CBD product here in the United States, called, Epidiolex. And in patients with Dravet syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut, and tuberous sclerosis, we have hard evidence that cannabidiol in doses between 500 and 2,000 milligrams can reduce seizure frequency. Some investigators are now using CBD rich products in patients with other types of epilepsy and seeing encouraging results.
So when it comes to treating patients with cannabis medicine, number one, don’t be afraid. It’s worth trying. It’s safe. It’s CBD. And number two, remember that the dose often needs to be 10 or 15 milligrams per kilogram, which gets up to around 1,500 milligrams per day for a 40-kilogram or so youngster.
