Yoshie "Sharlyn" Sazawa was a Japanese scuba diving instructor and translator who lived on Koh Tao for 12 years. She worked for several diving schools on the island, most notably the Big Blue Diving school where she ran the program for Japanese tourists.
She died in mysterious circumstances in around 2004. The police dismissed her death as a suicide, which is a common conclusion of police on Koh Tao and throughout Thailand whenever a foreigner dies. At other times, Thai police will assert that a dead foreigner simply met with an unfortunate accident. Thailand does not have coroners and Thai police often neglect to properly investigate the deaths of foreigners.
There is almost no mention whatsoever in the mainstream media of Sharlyn's death. Koh Tao holds many secrets. There is only a passing reference in the Phuket Gazette on 16 April 2005 several months after the tragedy.
