The one rule that works is simple: Be Yourself. Period. No games. No manuals. No playbooks. Honesty and authenticity. Not because it works (which it does, but that’s just a bonus). Do it because you want to have a better, happier, healthier relationship, one that doesn’t end up in divorce or heartache. When you date based on pretense you are setting yourself up to fail.

Your friends and family will give you endless lists of well intentioned rules for dating online, for asking women out, for having sex after divorce and for finding women to date… But if you’re dating for the first time in years, maybe in decades, you don’t need all those rules.

I get it. I do. If you’re newly single, asking women out might feel really uncomfortable. If you’re over your ex wife (or nearly!) and are ready to date again, the best way to get past that discomfort is to go out there and give it a try. But there’s a catch. If you get back out there to give it a try and you show up pretending, playing games or trying to follow the rules, you’re going to come off as insecure at best and inauthentic (which to many women screams manipulative or controlling) at worst. Either way, it’s not likely to help you find a partner, or even a one night stand, that actually makes you feel good.
