The automated railway wheel boring machine cell machines wheels before the wheel set is reassembled. It receives the required bore dimension from the Wheel Seat Measuring Station, which is located elsewhere in the wheel shop. An overhead area gantry picks new wheels off of a pallet and places them in the wheel boring machine. The wheel borer automatically bores the wheel to the provided dimension and provides the taper and surface finish that is required. After boring, the gantry moves the wheel to a measurement station that confirms the bore size and provide feedback to the wheel borer for adjustment of the tools. If the bore measurement is acceptable, the gantry takes the wheel to a lubrication station and holds it in place while wheel mounting lubricant is applied to the bore. Once lubricated, the wheel is placed in a cart that moves the wheel from the automated wheel boring machine cell to the automated wheel mounting cell.
