South Africa: Conservationists Wage Legal Battle to Protect African Penguins | Firstpost Africa
African penguins are facing the threat of extinction. There are just 8750 breeding pairs of penguins left in South Africa. These adorable birds do have natural predators, but humans continue to be their biggest enemies as climate change threatens their colonies. It is becoming harder for penguins to access food amid shifting ocean currents and temperatures. However, BirdLife South Africa and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds organisations have decided to fight for these birds. The conservationists are taking legal action against the South African government to protect penguins, arguing that the ministers failed to adequately protect these endangered species.
