Tanner Burns may not be a name you are familiar with, but I’m willing to bet that after this video, you will not forget his name. Tanner is a full time school teacher in Buckhannon, West Virginia and runs a taxidermy studio called “Full Draw Taxidermy” where he specializes in Wild Turkey Taxidermy.
Tanner’s passion for hunting is in the turkey woods. As a young boy he spent his time chasing turkeys in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. But his passion for traveling to turkey hunt was sparked in high school when his gym teachers invited him on an Alabama Public Land Turkey hunt in the spring of 2012.
While at camp in 2012, Tanner was introduced to Kenny Mount or you may better know him as “Chubbs” from the pinhoti project. Kenny took Tanner hunting that week and they had a successful hunt in Alabama, landing Tanner his first out of state turkey.
For many springs to follow, Tanner and Kenny would make a trip out west to turkey hunt, working towards Kenny’s US Super Slam and Before he knew it, Tanner was 10 states deep and decided that the following spring he would pursue his own US Super Slam.
Tanner says that for the next few years he would hunt 6-8 states each spring! He even had one spring where he hunted 11 states in a single spring. All while holding a full time teaching job AND doing taxidermy!
We featured Tanner as a guest on Whitetail Cribs, which is one of my favorite episodes to date, and after filming we were able to record a Trail Cam Radio Podcast to learn more about him.
Tanner got started in Taxidermy by boiling skulls and doing euro mounts on the side while he was in high school and throughout college.
Tanner is one of the best turkey taxidermists in the country. Hands down! In 2019 he placed First in the NWTF Professional Division. And in 2020 had a second place finish in the NWTF Master’s Division.
At the time of the Trail Cam Radio podcast, Tanner was just 29 years old and had completed 42 of 49 states needed for the US Super Slam. On pace to be the youngest to ever complete all 49 states.
In the Spring of 2020, Tanner was able to fill 6 of the last 7 states. Leaving only Hawaii for the now 30 year old to complete his US Super Slam in 2021.
In February of 2021, Tanner Burns completed the US Super Slam in EPIC Fashion.
Not only did it come in Hawaii, on a volcano, filmed for the Pinhoti Project, but he took an ALL WHITE longbeard as his last bird of the Slam.
I don’t know how it get’s any better than that.
Tanner, from everyone here at Exodus, we just want to say Congratulations on completing your US Super Slam, and thank you for sharing your passion for the Wild Turkey with us.
