UL conducted a side-by-side comparison of two fires representing modern and legacy fuels. The purpose of this test was to gain knowledge of the difference between modern and legacy furnishings as it relates to fire development. Initially the legacy fuels present an open flame with limited smoke. Within 2 minutes of ignition, the modern fuels have produced a visible smoke layer overhead, which progresses to a ventilation limited fire at 5:00. At 8:00 the door of the modern fuel structure is opened and the front window is ventilated. Two minutes and 15 seconds after ventilation is initiated, the modern fuel compartment reaches flashover. In contrast, the legacy fuel compartment becomes ventilation limited at 20:00 and slowly progress to flashover 8 minutes and 30 seconds after ventilation is initiated.
