A Semla (Semlor in plural) or fettisdagsbulle (fat Tuesday roll), is a typical Scandinavian pastry that historically is dated to the 1500s and was usually associated with the beginning of the lent or on the Monday before lent.
The oldest version of this dessert consisted of a simple bun dipped in a bowl of hot milk.
Today's traditional semla that Swedes are so crazy about (they eat around 40 million Semlor over the season - That’s more than four per Swede! ) is a wheat flour bun flavored with cardamom and filled with almond paste and vanilla-whipped cream atop Semlor are available in every bakery and cafe in Sweden near after Christmas until Easter.
