The Columbia Gorge was formed by the melting of the last ice age and the flooding of Missoula Lake. The igneous rock flowed here to depths of almost a mile in thickness some 17 million years ago.
What is left are steep escarpments of basalt rock and isolated beaches along the meandering river banks.
