Insurgents in Syria appear to have captured an advanced Russian air defence system, according to images circulating on social media. Images appear to show Russian equipment, including a Pantsir-S1 missile system, in the hands of rebel forces in Aleppo
The claim was confirmed by the US-based think tank, Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which said opposition forces "have likely captured valuable military equipment."
The Pantsir missile system was likely to have been "abandoned” by pro-regime fighters amid “disorderly withdrawals." This after rebels launched a surprise offensive last week in northern Syria that marked an end to a long-running stalemate. On Nov. 27, rebel forces swept into Aleppo and the Hama province, to the south of the city, in a surprise offensive. The rebel offensive likely met little resistance from forces controlled by Syrian President and Kremlin ally, Bashar al-Assad.
