Guitar center speakers set up for listening. Surprisingly the biggest standout was the small cheap Adam monitor which was perfect for strings and plucked sounds... Focal wasn't as detailed as the Twin6 Be in college sounded based on memory. Too much hiss in most, especially the JBL LSR308. The 705p sounded very cluttered, perhaps due to the desk reflection. Yamaha seems clear on vocals, almost everything lacks a bit of bass. Need to look at larger monitors.
Here is a useful resource for hiss comparison by brand on Audio Science Review:

Current opinion is that if you need quiet speakers you should get the Kali IN-5 not shown here, until you can afford a Genelec system. The IN5, IN-8 v2, and other second wave monitors are excellent for being quiet and transparent and a good price to performance ratio, and subjectively they are about as quiet as the Genelec monitors they are compared to in my home.
