Play is just one of the vehicles of self-discovery for children. Children also discover who they are by being an integral part of their family, by experiencing competency and autonomy, by learning how to be by themselves - without being constantly entertained.
Please don’t think we aren’t saying that children shouldn’t play. Children absolutely NEED PLAY for healthy development, but we are saying that that play doesn’t have to happen within the context of parenting for children to turn out OK.
In many ways, the pendulum has swung too far towards a “child-centric” culture and needs to readjust to a “family centric” culture where both a child and adult’s needs are met.
