Oh my! There is nowhere like Almaty Kazakhstan and you just have to see it to understand it! We had a crazy cool first day here and were amazed at how much there is to do! 😎

Here is a day itinerary for an epic 24 hours in Almaty city Kazakhstan:

1 Zhibek Joly - town centre - walking street with coffee shops, ice cream, street performers and street markets.

2 Green Bazaar (Zelony Bazaar) - 10 minute walk from Zhibek Joly. They sell dried fruits, fresh fruits, nuts and a raw meat section. Don’t miss the clothing and gift market nextdoor.

3 Ascension cathedral and park - 10 minute walk from Green Bazaar, great place to see the Russian Orthodox cathedral and feed the pigeons.

4 Shashlik - 500-1000 Tenge for a large skwer of BBQ meat (£1-2) - there are many places around town. Our favourite is esmerelda opposite to the junction of Rozybakeva and Basinova

5 Kok tobe - lovely hill on the edge of Almaty city - great spot for watching sunset. You can take a cable car from the station at the junction of Abai-Dostyk

TOP TIPS on transport in Almaty:

You can take local buses, use gypsie cab (any car can act as a cab) - just stand at the end of the road and flag a car - agree a price before you jump in. It should cost around 500 - 1000 tenge (£1-2) depending on the distance around the city. Top tip: The clearest way to say where you want to go is to ask for the nearest intersection (e.g. Abai-Dostyk) and learn some russian numbers to get better prices. There are also registered taxis that may charge a little more.
