There are four category results from a Colposcopy - normal, level 2 or level 3 dysplasia, which means pre-cancer. You may also hear these categorized as mild, moderate or severe dysplasia. Level 1 dysplasia requires no additional treatment or concern as it typically resolves on its own. If you have a level 2 or above, that's our trigger to treat. To treat, we simply remove the abnormal cells so a cancer diagnosis does not occur. Most abnormal pap smears we find are in the low grade range, and all of these problems are fixable if caught early.
