Liver inflammation causes mild to severe symptoms that may appear suddenly or develop overtime. We uncover the signs, symptoms, various causes and treatment for this condition, in this video.
Liver inflammation, also known as hepatitis, is a condition where the liver becomes swollen and irritated. It is typically caused by a viral infection, excessive alcohol consumption, certain medications, autoimmune diseases, or other factors that can damage the liver.
When the liver is inflamed, it may not function properly, leading to various symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. In some cases, liver inflammation can be chronic and lead to long-term liver damage or scarring (cirrhosis).
To diagnose liver inflammation, doctors may perform blood tests to check for elevated liver enzymes and other markers of liver damage. They may also use imaging tests, such as ultrasound or CT scan, to assess the condition of the liver.
Treatment for liver inflammation depends on the underlying cause. If it's due to a viral infection, antiviral medications may be prescribed. In cases of alcohol-related hepatitis, it's important to stop drinking alcohol. Medications that cause liver inflammation may need to be discontinued or replaced with alternatives. Supportive care, such as rest, proper nutrition, and avoiding substances that can further harm the liver, is also crucial.
