STORYLINE:
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on Friday called on the Syrian government to "stop the violence in the name of humanity", whilst on a visit to the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, close to the Syrian border.
Ban toured the refugee camp with the head of the UNHCR in Jordan, Andrew Harper, and met Syrian schoolchildren, with whom he shared his own impoverished childhood experiences.
He later held a news conference where he said that tens of thousands of people had died in the Syrian conflict.
"I'm shocked and saddened and even angry at this human tragedy. After 21 months, more than 40-thousand people have been killed, we do not know how many people have been injured."
He also called on the international community to provide greater humanitarian assistance for Syrian refugees.
"I therefore call upon and appeal most urgently to international community, and particularly the countries in this region, to provide on an urgent basis the humanitarian assistance," said Ban.
"We need your carrying hands to those helpless people," he added.
According to Jordanian officials, Jordan alone hosts more than 250-thousand Syrian refugees.
40-thousand of those currently live in the Zaatari camp, which is located around 9 miles (15 kilometres) from the border of Syria in Northern Jordan.
