Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is reportedly building up military forces near the Syrian border, according to senior US officials. Militia groups, along with significant artillery, have gathered near the northern Syrian city of Kobani, which lies along the border with Türkiye. The US believes an incursion is imminent, with Erdogan likely to order an invasion to target US-backed Syrian Kurdish forces. In the past, Erdogan has openly expressed plans to push these groups further away from Türkiye’s border. He has also proposed creating a buffer zone — a no-man’s-land between Türkiye and Syria. Now, with Turkish forces mobilising, fears of an invasion are mounting. A senior Syrian Kurdish official has reportedly written to US President-elect Donald Trump, urging him to intervene. "Turkiye’s goal is to establish de facto control over our land before you take office, forcing you to engage with them as rulers of our territory," he said. On Monday, Trump commented on the situation in Syria. "Syria is full of uncertainties. Nobody knows exactly what will happen there. But I believe Türkiye holds the key to Syria. I don’t think anyone else has said that, but I’ve been pretty good at making predictions," he said.
