What conversations have you overheard in a language they assumed you don't know?
I didn’t actually understand the language, but my friend did. We were at lunch, and as I headed to our table, I stumbled and fell. Pretty embarrassed, I got up quickly and sat down. Behind us, two guys started talking loudly in Russian.
My friend, who’s from Kazakhstan, leaned over and said, “They’re talking about you.” When I asked what they were saying, he told me they were making comments like, “Is he so clueless he can’t even walk straight? This is why I hate people in this city.”
My friend came up with an idea. He told me to get up and head toward the restroom, and he’d call me back as I passed by the guys. Then, he’d say something to me in Russian, and he showed me a phrase to respond with so we’d look like we were having a conversation in their language. He told me to act surprised at first, then gradually nod like I understood.
So, I got up and walked by their table. He called after me loudly, and we had our “conversation” in Russian:
“You know what’s annoying? People who assume no one else can understand them just because they’re speaking another language out in public.”
“Totally. It’s funny how they sit around judging others without thinking twice.”
The guys looked completely shocked. After a second, they switched to talking about the weather in English and left soon after.
