The cost of biobanking, an analysis of cost recovery at the Victorian Cancer Biobank
We welcome you to join us for our next online presentation in the Statewide Biobank Seminar Series on Wednesday 30th October, 2024, 12-1pm.
Jonas Hess, PhD, Business Development Manager at Victorian Cancer Biobank, will outline why financial sustainability remains one of the critical issues for biobanking services.
Topic Summary: While biobanks have been widely recognised as a critical research infrastructure for advancement of medical sciences, financial sustainability remains one of the top issues in the biobanking sector. Taking high operational cost of biobanking into consideration, public/private funding models together with cost recovery are very common revenue models for biobanks. Determining the true cost of services for a cost recovery model is complicated by issues that are variable between cohorts and biobanks and thereby poorly reflected to the overall operational cost of the biobank. In addition to determining cost of services, the process of establishing cost recovery also needs to consider the perception and affordability by the research community. This presentation aims to introduce key steps on the road to establishing the cost of services and subsequent cost recovery models using the Victorian Cancer Biobank process of establishing a cost recovery schedule as an example.
About our presenter: After being a beneficiary of biobanking infrastructure for multiple years conducting cancer research at the Walter and Elizha Hall Institute, Jonas transitioned to working for the Victorian Cancer Biobank as the Business Development Manager. Jonass has been responsible for client side contact, and organization of project agreements and executions. This includes pricing, price discussions and the revamp of the VCB cost recovery schedule.
