14 September 2014: This unusual recording was captured by the Ocean Sonics icListen high frequency hydrophone deployed at 1256m depth at Clayoquot Slope. Experts who have listened to the recording are not able to identify the call with certainty due to a lack of information about Baird's beaked whale vocalizations, although the consensus is that it is probably a Baird's beaked whale. Baird beaked whales have not been studied as much as other whales as they are primarily offshore and tend to be elusive.
