Joseph V. Bonventre, MD, PhD, FASN, Past President
Joseph V. Bonventre, MD, PhD holds appointments as the Samuel A. Levine Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Health Sciences and Technology at MIT. He is Chief of the Division of Renal Medicine of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and also founding Chief of the Division of Engineering in Medicine at the BWH. His research focuses primarily on the study of kidney injury and repair and signal transduction, with a special emphasis on the role of inflammation, biomarkers and stem cells. Bonventre has authored more than 360 original publications and 150 invited chapters and reviews, has received two MERIT awards from the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders (NIDDK), and his work has been cited more than 52,000 times with an h-index of 117. He has been elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He currently serves on the Advisory Council of the NIDDK.
Dr. Bonventre has been very active in mentoring throughout his career. In addition to his role in training physician scientists as Director of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology for 10 years and in influencing the careers of clinicians and scientists in his hospital leadership roles, he has trained more than 175 individuals in his laboratory. He was voted one of three top mentors in the US by postdoctoral fellows in the journal "Science", in 2004.
Dr. Bonventre is currently on the Council of the International Society of Nephrology. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the National Space Biology Research Institute and has served on the Board of Advisors of the Norwegian Institute for Science and Technology and Board of Advisors of the Dean of the Cornell University School of Engineering. He has served on many NIH, ASN and other funding agency Study Sections and is Editor of Seminars in Nephrology. He has been awarded the Osler Medal of the Royal Society of Physicians and the Bywaters Award of the International Society of Nephrology.
In addition to his BS with distinction in Engineering Physics from Cornell, Bonventre holds M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in biophysics from Harvard University. He has honorary doctorate degrees from Mt. Saint Mary’s College and from the Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology in Norway.
Dr. Bonventre lives in Wayland, Massachusetts with his wife Kristie. They have two children, Joanna and Andrew and three grandchildren, Daniel, Alex and Taylor.
