Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam commented Friday on the news that Health Canada had found the benefits of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine “continue to outweigh the risks” after investigating reports of blood clots in several countries. She said rare adverse reactions are expected when vaccines are deployed on a global scale and they “must be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.”
The agency said an assessment of available data on the reports out of Europe determined no link between the vaccine and an increase in the overall risk of blood clots. Health Canada stressed that the reports themselves were rare, and suggested blood clots “can also be due to COVID-19” itself.
Nearly a dozen countries resumed the use of AstraZeneca’s shots on Friday.
The United States also plans to send roughly 4 million doses of the vaccine that it is not using to Mexico and Canada in loan deals with the two countries, bowing to pressure to share vaccine with its allies.
