In the summer of 2018, less than a year after dictator Robert Mugabe’s removal from power in a 2017 military coup, Zimbabwe holds its first democratic election in nearly 40 years. Challenging the incumbent president Emmerson Mnangagwa — formerly vice president under Mugabe — is the charismatic Nelson Chamisa, who draws comparisons to a young Nelson Mandela in expressing his nation’s desire to be “governed” and not “ruled.” Amidst a nation beset by economic hardships, food shortages, and political violence, documentary filmmaker Camilla Nielsson (Democrats) gains intimate access to Chamisa’s campaign as he struggles not just for power, but also for a free, fair, and credible election.
