Hungary transported refugees by train to Austria on Monday, trying to divert record numbers streaming into the country before it closes down a refugee crossing point on the border with Serbia.
The Hungarian government is threatening to arrest and jail anyone caught illegally crossing its southern border from Serbia as of Tuesday, and to hold or expel asylum seekers under new laws adopted to stem the flow of refugees trying to reach Europe.
In the southern border town of Roszke, police and soldiers took position across a railway track, which tens of thousands of refugees, many of whom are Syrian, have used for the past few months to enter the EU from Serbia.
The police had completely cleared the makeshift camps in Roszke by early Monday and transported refugees by bus to the train station, where special trains would take them on a several hour journey to the Austrian border.
Hungary is a key transit route for migrants and refugees, who reach the Greek islands from Turkey, travel on through Macedonia and Serbia, and hope to cross Hungary to seek asylum in Western Europe.
According to Hungarian authorities, hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees have entered Hungary from Serbia this year.
The country has built a fence on the border with Serbia to try to stop the refugees. Also, a new law comes into effect in Hungary on Tuesday, making illegal border crossing a criminal act.
