Lagavulin has long been a staple amongst whisky lovers around the globe. Although it's no longer the top dog on Islay (both Laphroaig and Bowmore now sell more), the 16 year old expression is still a right of passage for all whisky fans.
Lagavulin hit 200 years old (as far as legal distilling is concerned) in 2016 and they are celebrating the fact by changing their livery and adding a few new expressions. One such expression is the 8 year.
Light and straw like in colour, it's smokey and peaty but is held together with an amazing sweetness that has to be smelt to be understood. On the palette, it's sweet until the second you swallow and then a wave of bonfire smoke and charred oak leaps out at you. The finish is long and smokey, like a chilly winters night in front of the bonfire.
£50 is a big asking price for an 8 year old whisky, but Lagavulin know what they've created and I'd say it's worth every penny.
