In this video Andrea Hemingway gives us a masterclass in how to use ice, or 'cryotherapy', or 'cold therapy' to tackle pain, swelling and inflammation.
Andrea is a physiotherapist based in the North West of England and has over twenty years' experience of supporting people with arthritis.
Warning! Applying ice can be a cheap and effective self-management technique but be careful! Applying ice for too long can cause damage to the skin or what's known as a 'skin burn'. To avoid this use ice or ice packs for only 15 minutes at a time, take extra care with the gel ice packs that can get very cold and stay cold for longer and use a tea towel to avoid placing ice packs or gel packs directly onto the skin
