Russia's President Vladimir Putin on December 28 apologised to Azeri President Ilham Aliyev for a "tragic incident" which happened in Russian airspace involving an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane that crashed on December 25. The passenger flight J2-8243 crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan after being diverted from the southern Russian city of Grozny, where the Kremlin said Ukrainian drones were attacking. At least 38 people were killed, while 29 survived.
