Dozens of Afghan couples tied the knot at a Kabul mass wedding ceremony organized by a charity.
STORYLINE:
Brides and grooms in the double digits celebrated getting married at a mass wedding organized by an Afghan charity group in Kabul.
The brides wore wedding gowns covered with a green cloth to hide the face, while the grooms were dressed in the traditional Afghan shalwar kameez.
The mass wedding event was organized by Selab foundation.
It helped 70 couples, who could not afford to pay for their wedding expenses, get married.
Getting married in Afghanistan is very expensive and it is hard for a young Afghan with a low income to afford to pay for a wedding.
The back-breaking expenses that a groom's family is expected to cover often include a dowry, jewelry, expensive gifts and the cost of hosting a party for hundreds of guests.
Haji Sayed Ahmad Selab, the organizer of the mass wedding, said mass weddings can help grooms find a way around the demands made by the bride's family.
