Synopsis:
Rome is world-famous for its countless churches, cathedrals and monuments. In the center is the Villa Borghese, one of the largest and most beautiful parks in the "eternal city". The garden was once located outside the city walls and surrounded the summer residence of Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli-Borghese. He was one of the most influential art collectors of the Italian Baroque period. In the actual villa, which gave the park its name, he kept works by Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and Caravaggio. Today, the park is open to all citizens.
For the Romans, the large green space on the Pincio hill is a stroke of luck. Nowhere else in the city center can you relax as well as here. In summer, you can meet the restaurateur Amir Azar here, who runs a kiosk in the heart of the park, tempting his customers with typical Italian refreshments. Autumn brings a welcome cool down. On the edge of the park, in the lively Campo Marzio district, is the Santa Cecilia Music Academy. There you meet Ilaria Livrizzi, who has been studying the cello for two years.
In winter, Villa Borghese takes on a melancholy atmosphere. On some days, everything seems gray in gray. Daniele Lombardi is on his way to work: he is a porter at the prestigious Hotel de Russie. Wearing a coat, shirt and top hat, he does his job, which is all about inner and outer poise on a daily basis. It's spring: Umberto Testi is the head gardener at Villa Borghese and is responsible for the well-being of the park's flora. "You don't just have to be a gardener, but also a historian, architect and engineer.
We live in the present, but plan for the future," is his definition of the task he performs. They are the oases of our metropolitan areas: the large city parks. They combine nature, culture and a country's way of life. This series portrays some of the best-known parks in Paris, Munich, London, Stockholm and Rome. As the seasons change, on water, on land and from the air, the series "Europe's most beautiful parks" takes a stroll through urban greenery and rediscovers European metropolises with millions of inhabitants.
