As Guyana joined other Caribbean nations to celebrate Emancipation Day on Tuesday, President Dr. Irfaan Ali reaffirmed his government’s commitment to calls for reparations. For at least 10 years, Caribbean leaders have been formally calling for these reparations following years of African enslavement and Indigenous genocide that have resulted in enduring issues to date. The President’s renewed commitment comes as the University of the West Indies joined forces last week with the Economic, Social, and Cultural Council of the African Union, the Barbados government, the Open Society Foundations, and the Caribbean Pan African Network to bolster the call for reparations.
