As Washington and the world await the findings of various investigations into Russian meddling in the US presidential election, the debate goes on about how best to defend against disinformation campaigns. Kennan Fellow Nina Jankowicz is focused on the “fake news” phenomenon and online propaganda wars and what can be done about them. Her thoughts provide the focus for this edition of Wilson Center NOW.

Nina Jankowicz is a 2017 George F. Kennan Fellow and a democracy, governance, and communications specialist with a focus on Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. In 2016-2017, she advised the Ukrainian government on strategic communications under the auspices of a Fulbright-Clinton Public Policy Fellowship. While in Ukraine, she undertook a research project on the response to Russian disinformation in Europe, work that she is expanding upon during her tenure at the Wilson Center. Her writing has been published by The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, and Atlantic Council’s Ukraine Alert. She is a commentator on Russian and Eastern European affairs. Prior to her Fulbright, she managed democracy assistance programs to Russia and Belarus at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and later worked on NDI’s Government Relations and Communications team. Ms. Jankowicz received her MA in Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, where she was a Title VIII and FLAS scholarship recipient, and her BA from Bryn Mawr College, where she graduated magna cum laude. She has lived and worked in Russia, and speaks fluent Russian and proficient Polish and Ukrainian. She was a member of the 2015-2016 class of Rising Experts at the Washington, DC-based Center on Global Interests.
