Full-scale Shake Table Testing of Resilient Mass Timber Lateral Systems — Dr. Shiling Pei, Assistant Professor, Colorado School of Mines

A full-scale two-story mass timber building was tested at the UC San Diego outdoor shake table during the summer of 2017 as part of NSF funded NHERI TallWood Project. The building has an open floor plan suitable for commercial and mixed applications. Two different resilient mass-timber lateral systems were tested under a total of 27 earthquakes, including a post-tensioned rocking wall system and a repairable rocking wall system. The results showed that mass timber buildings with resilient rocking wall system can minimize owner loss and repair time even after major earthquakes.
