Today, with David Allen MW, Wine-Searcher's Wine Director we are tasting a Cava, a bottle fermented sparkling wine from Catalonia in Spain. In this case it is Castillo Perelada's Reserva Brut Cava NV.

The Castilo Pereleda itself dates back to 1285 and is a magnificent fortified home in the centre of Emporda, a town near the cost and close to the border with France. The estate was purchased in 1923 by Miguel Mateu Pla, a member of the family who founded the Hispanio-Suiza motorcar manufacturer. The estate has a history of winegrowing that dates back to the 14th century, Miguel set out to produce quality wines here. Today Miguel's grandson Javier Suqué Mateu runs the company and they produce some of the Emporda DO's best red wines.

In 1979 the family added a bodegas producing Cava in the town of Villa Franca de Penedes to their portfolio of wineries. Today they are very successful producers of quality sparkling wines
