Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest freshwater lake and the second largest in the world, the principal source of the River Nile, supporting over 40 million people.
A study "estimated that 88 to 95 percent of the plastic transported by 1,350 large rivers around the world...comes from only 10 rivers, all of which are in Asia and Africa" (SOURCE: AFP) and the Nile is one of them.
A more recent study showed a staggering 75% of sampled fish from the river Nile had plastics in their guts and 1 in 5 fish in Lake Victoria contained microplastics.
Join the Flipflopi team and let's take the message upstream to bring to the world’s attention to the importance of the Lake and freshwater systems, vital to protect lives, livelihoods, the oceans and planetary climate, and to change mindsets and behaviours around plastic pollution.
