Saghmosavank (Armenian: Սաղմոսավանք, lit. "Monastery of Psalms") is a 13th-century Armenian monastic complex located in the village of Saghmosavan in the Aragatsotn region of Armenia.
Like the Hovhanavank Monastery, located five kilometers to the south, Saghmosavank is located at the top of a steep gorge cut by the Kasakh River.
Their silhouettes dominate the surrounding villages and rise sharply against the backdrop of mountains topped by Mount Aragats.
One type of cross-domed buildings with two-story extensions includes the main buildings of the monasteries built by Prince Vache Vachutyan - the Church of Zion in Saghmosavank (1215) - all corners of the building.
The interiors of both churches are dominated by the domed space, which is reflected in the external forms of these structures.
Saghmosavank consists of four main buildings adjacent to each other: the Surb Zion Church, a book depository and a large vestibule.
The Saghmosavank monastery complex was one of the richest and most famous spiritual centers of medieval Armenia.
According to legend, in the 4th century the first Armenian Catholicos Gregory the Illuminator came here, noticing this place from the top of Aragats and built a church.
He then gathered the priests in the same place and taught them the psalms.
