Our Big Baltic Adventure continues as we arrive onto the stunning island of Rügen, a real gem on the German Baltic Coast.
First up, we enjoy a brief overnight stop at a local craft food market, Alte Pommernkate, where we sample a Baltic coast delicacy we've seen on our travel before... Ostsee Schlamm!
Onwards to the historic resort of Prora, home to possibly one of the spookiest places we've ever been, an abandoned Nazi German holiday resort! As shocking as it sounds, we explain how and why the area is getting a new lease of life, and a new place in German history.
As we rolled into Binz, we were struck by the quaint, retro-charm of the amazing architecture, and of course the gorgeous sandy beaches. It's a real throw-back to the German seaside resorts of old, and got us thinking a lot about the famed Victorian resorts we know back home!
A ride on the amazing Rügensche BäderBahn (Rügen Narrow Gauge Railway) had Sam all excited - his first steam train trip since we left the UK - it was a real beaut though, perfectly preserved German steam locos and cute little carriages, as we rattled through the scenic forest landscapes from Sellin to Binz and back. And speak of Sellin, a trip to its famous pier was in order too!
Finally, before we left Germany and headed into Poland, we stopped off at Peenemünde. The site of the development of the V1 and V2 rockets that the Nazis used against the Southern England during WWII. It too was a hauntingly beautiful place, now fully dedicated to education and the spread of peace and reconciliation across Europe... but we learned a whole lot more than we thought we would... including how the 'space race' actually began on this quiet German peninsular.
Thank you Germany, now Poland beckons!
