Professor Martin Williams, from King's College, London, currently leads scientific research in support of air quality and climate change policies at the national and international level. Since 2002, he has been Head of the Air Quality Division in DEFRA, part of the United Kingdom's Environment Ministry, with responsibilities ranging from air-quality policy to industrial pollution control and research. Prior to that, he was Head of the Science Unit on Air Quality at DEFRA and technical adviser at the Department of Trade and Industry. His previous experience includes work at the air pollution division of the Warren Spring Laboratory, of which he became Head in 1982.
Professor Williams has acted as adviser to a number of regional and global organizations (the European Union, the World Health Organization, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)), as well as national Governments. He has represented the British Government in different international forums.
Currently he is Chair of the Executive Body of the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution. He was lead author of the policy section of the UNEP/WMO Integrated Assessment of Short-lived Climate Forcers (2011).
