Vladimir Putin pointed to Ukraine's history to bolster Russia's claim to it, with his comment that Ukraine has no right to exist.
But exist it has, outside Russia's influence, since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991.
So questions have been raised over whether the Russian leader is simply trying to turn the clock back or if his strategic ambitions are more complicated.
