Are you the kind of player who tries to memorize tons of licks hoping that the more licks you play the more expressive you will be. I'm sorry to tell you that music does not work like that.
In this lesson, I'm going to show you how I approach coming up with new ideas that sound different and really sound like you. It has to do with targeting certain notes and approaching them in a very particular way.
First, we need a quick reminder about music theory. Music theory is about matching elements together. We are going to take a major triad as our musical canvas for this lesson. The three notes in our triad have a function: the root, the third and the fifth.
A scale is made out of seven notes. In our triad, we already have three of those notes. The notes left are the second, the fourth, the sixth and the seventh. We can pick any type or second, fourth sixth or seventh. It depends on what works for you.
The less amount of chords you have in a chord, the most amount of options you have as to what you want to play. This allows you to be very creative.
In the accompanying PDF for this lesson, I laid out for you three four-note chords: a dominant seventh chord, a major seventh chord, and a minor seventh chord.
The idea is to pick an area of the fretboard and start playing the strong notes (the ones in the chords). For the rest of the notes, you get to pick any color you like. It's about exploring and getting comfortable with these outside notes.
If you have a better understanding of what the note is going to do within the context (the chords), you are going to be more engaged and less mechanical.
