Description:
Welcome to #Jerusalem, #HolyCity to all three #monotheistic #religions. In this video we will walk from #LionsGate through the ancient #MuslimYousefia cemetery. We will pass the #RockefellerMuseum and the #FlowerGate (#Herod"sGate) and end this virtual video tour at the #DamascusGate.
Lions Gate (00:00)
This is one of the eight gates that lead into the #OldCityOfJerusalem. They are all part of the #TurkishOttoman #CityWall, which was erected here in the 16th century. #LionsGate is actually a misnomer, because the two relief-animals that can be seen on either side of the gate are #panthers, which were the symbol of the #Mamluk #Sultan #Baybars. This means that the #Ottomans took these chiseled stones from the 13th century and reused them as building material for their 16th century gate, thus wrongly referring to it as #LionsGate.
Yousefia Muslim Cemetery (01:30)
The #YousefiyaCemetery stretches along the entire length of the eastern part of #Jerusalem's #OldCityWall. The name #Yousefia refers to #Saladin, whose full name was Salah al-Din #Yusuf ibn #Ayyub. He is said to have donated the land upon which this cemetery was built, which is why it was named after him.
Memorial to fallen Jordanian Soldiers (05:15)
As we walk along the cemetery, we can make out a white #obelisk on our right side, which is half-obscured by a tree. This is a #memorial for the #JordanianSoldiers who fell in the #BattleForJerusalem during the #1967 #SixDayWar. The request by the #MuslimAuthorities for this #memorial had not immediately been granted by the #JerusalemMunicipality. In the end, the discussion about its construction went all the way to the #IsraeliParliament (#Knesset), where the request was only granted after then-mayor Teddy Kollek became personally involved in its favor.
Rockefeller Museum (06:20)
On our left side, we see the building of the #RockefellerMuseum. It houses an #ArchaeologicalMuseum, as well as the offices of the #IsraelAntiquitiesAuthority. The structure was inaugurated in 1938 as the #PalestineArchaeologicalMuseum, when the #British ruled the land. According to medieval historical documents, the #Crusaders broke into Jerusalem's city wall in the area that is right across from today's Rockefeller Museum.
Flower Gate - Herod's Gate (10:25)
The Flower Gate is called BabAzZahra (باب الزاهرة) in Arabic and Shaar HaPrachim (שער הפרחים) in Hebrew. Another name for it is Herod's Gate, named after King Herod the Great, who ruled in Jerusalem in the 1st century BCE. From here, one can access the Muslim Quarter and reach the Via Dolorosa after about a ten-minute walk.
Damascus Gate (15:45)
Damascus Gate is the largest and most beautiful gate of the Old City. Because of its location in a valley, it needed to be protected by a massive gate house, which was flanked by two large defensive towers. Damascus Gate is the main entrance into the Old City for the Arab Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem, as well as for the Ultra-Orthodox Jews who live in the neighborhood of Meah Shearim.
