"First and foremost the voter turn-out is the best since 1989. This signifies a great mobilisation of voters in Poland. It also signifies Poles choosing a Western democracy model because for the last two years, the government in Poland pointed towards an Eastern type of power in the way of ruling a country."

"We will be a very determined and hard opposition party, which will hold promises accountable. Because a miracle was promised, improvements were promised for the Polish economy, lower taxes, higher salaries and so on. Nobody in the world has thus far been able to achieve these things. I of course wish Donald Tusk all the best, and I congratulate him. But again, I repeat, we will be holding accountable everything that has been said."

STORYLINE:
A pro-business opposition party that wants Poland's troops out of Iraq ousted Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski's government, exit polls showed, as Poles opted for leadership offering a more cooperative approach to the European Union.
The Civic Platform party led by Donald Tusk led with 43.6 percent of the vote and 227 seats in the 460-seat Sejm lower house on Sunday, according to exit polls for private TVN24.
That was short of the 231 needed for a majority, but close enough to join with a smaller party to form a government.
Tusk thanked his supporters, with whom he celebrated the results of the exit polls on Sunday evening:
"I would like to thank those who went out on 21 October and who made a choice, a choice that would improve their fate. For many many weeks we tried to convince Poles that life in Poland can really become better."
Appearing before supporters late on Sunday, Kaczynski conceded defeat, but promised that his party "will be a very determined and hard opposition party, which will hold promises accountable," referring to Tusk's promises to improve the economy, lower taxes and increase salaries.
"Nobody in the world has thus far been able to achieve these things," Kaczynski added. "We will be holding accountable everything that has been said."
Kaczynski's Law and Justice party got 31.1 percent and 156 seats.
