The price of soybean oil has risen to a record high... on Indonesia's ban on exports of palm oil,... which is set a make huge dent in the global supply of edible oils of all kinds.
In Chicago, as of Wednesday, soybean oil futures for July delivery were up more than 20 percent this month... to over 84 dollars a pound.
Indonesia's ban on exports of crude palm oil takes effect from today.
Soy oil is used in food products, cosmetics, detergents and more.
This will likely raise food prices even more, already under pressure from the war in Ukraine... and poor harvests of a number of crops globally.
International agencies like the World Food Programme have said this will lead to famine in some of the world's poorest countries.
