It is July 1994, a French financial market regulator, (the Commission des opérations de Bourse (COB)) had just sent a troubling report to the Paris public prosecutor's office regarding a shady investment made by one of France’s big oil company (Elf Aquitaine) and a prominent French bank (Credit Lyonnais) in supporting this failing textile group (Bidderman group) run by a man (Maurice Bidderman) with powerful connections.

This report raised concerns about the conditions under which these investments were made, possibly involving potential financial misconduct. What started as a simple suspicion began to unravel something much bigger.

Fast forward to August 18, 1994, this suspicion led the Paris prosecutor to launch a formal judicial investigation for "abuse of social property," led by this influential French Judge known for her work on financial and corporate corruption cases- Eva Joly.

This investigation soon widened as investigators found evidence of this company’s shady dealings in Spain, Germany and most interestingly, the African continent, where they used cash and influence to secure lucrative oil deals from some African leaders, often at the expense of their country.

This investigation would go on for more than eight years generating more than 45,000 pages of documents, as investigators uncovered what will be known as one of the biggest fraud inquiries in Europe since the Second World War.

But What role did Africa play in this fraud? How did this French company come to hold such a big influence in Africa, and who were the people involved in this scandal?

This is the story of Elf Aquitaine, one of the most corrupt oil cabals in the world.
