(19 Feb 2017) Thousands of people gathered in Venice's St Mark's Square on Sunday for the traditional "Flight of the Angel" parade.
In the traditional celebration, which in various forms dates back centuries, a woman dressed in a carnival costume descends from the bell tower of Saint Mark's Basilica.
Originally called the Flight of The Turk, the tradition dates back to the 16th century, to the times of the Serenissima (the old Venetian Republic), when a Turkish acrobat walked a tightrope running to the top of the tower.
