Police say that a car bomb that exploded in a crowded outdoor market in the northern city of Kirkuk on Tuesday has killed at least 33 people, even as there were official celebrations marking the withdrawal of US combat troops from Iraqi cities.
The car bomb exploded as the vegetable and poultry market was crowded with people shopping for their evening meal, police Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qadir said.
Police and hospital officials gave the updated death toll and said about 90 people were wounded.
One eyewitness, 53-year-old Samad Hajir blamed the Iraqi security forces for not being at the market and said he feared that militants would try and take advantage of the withdrawal.
The bombing marred what had otherwise been a festive day as Iraqis marked what the government decreed National Sovereignty Day, to mark the withdrawal of US combat troops from Iraqi cities.
The deadly attack comes amid rising concerns of the an upsurge in violence as as Iraqi forces assume more responsibility for their own security.
It was the latest in a series of bombings and shootings that have killed more than 250 people since 20 June, including a truck bombing near Kirkuk that killed 82 people.
The top US commander General Ray Odierno in Iraq said the latest deaths showed militants remained a threat, but said he was confident Iraqi security forces could face the challenge.
