Improving mass public transport and expanding with programs like the EDSA Busway is the only way to fix the transport issues of Metro Manila.
It sounds ironic but the biggest problem with the EDSA busway is the buses!
Or more specifically the lack of discipline from the operators, drivers and conductors.
Imagine if each city in NCR kicked in some cash to buy a fleet of modern buses and let the GOVERNMENT operate the busway!
With SALARIED drivers and MODERN payment, tracking, dispatching and scheduling systems!
Overall feedback from commuters is positive. With many saying their trip is easier and faster than before.
But one of the common issues is when long queues of buses build up in the busway. Sometimes reaching as many as 30 buses in a row.
This can extend a commuters trips by more than an hour.
This happens because each bus wants to earn by picking up a couple of passengers. When really the buses at the front should just pass through and let the buses at the back pickup the waiting passengers.
On paper, the EDSA busway is operated by a consortium which shares the profits, meaning there should be no competition for picking up passengers. But the reality is very different.
Since this is obviously a profitable route, I really hope we will see it operated by the Government one day.
The EDSA Traffic Reaction Unit is led by Traffic Czar Bong Nebrija.
