I've been doing pet portrait commissions for over ten years, and I wish I had known this information sooner! It took almost giving up everything for me to figure out that I was approaching it all wrong.
I'm sure we are all very positive and hopeful when we start our commission business, but I learned that not allowing time for yourself to grow, create, rest and plan will lead to misery.
3 years after going full time with pet portrait commissions, and my art business, I can finally say I'm happy with where I am. I get genuinely excited to get to my easel everyday and paint, and that's the way it should be!
We are artists after all, would you make your hobby your job if you knew you would end up hating both? Probably not 😭
