When the forecast for the day called for bluebird cold front conditions and no weather change I looked at my good friend and client Rick and said, “we need to get out early for the score today!” I knew as the day would wear on that the conditions would be more challenging by the minute and the July boat traffic would pick up too. So that was the plan and we did just that. I met Rick and his long time buddy Monty at the launch bright and early and we got to work!
Just 10 minutes into our trip I glanced out at Rick’s TopRaider and we both said simultaneously, “here she comes!” Rick kept his composure, as the musky short-struck and then trashed at the TR before actually eating it, and then hammered the hooks home! It was game on and Rick and I communicated during the fight so that we were able to get the net under her quickly. Once the big musky was in the net we cut the hooks quickly to keep the fish in the water and as healthy as possible. A few photographs and she was back in the drink! We had a few other strikes during our morning trip but… that was it. Just like we called it, the musky we caught came very early, before the fog rolled off the water!

When you are hooked up with a big musky and the battle turns close-range around the bow, you need a long rod to help fight the fish so that you can avoid tangles with your trolling motor. The longer rods also help to make large sweeping figure-8’s and make bombing TopRaiders out a long distance easy.
