The rock salt is crushed using a pestle and mortar so the salt can dissolve more easily in the water. Filtration is a separation technique where large insoluble substances are trapped, allowing the solvent and dissolved solutes to pass through. The equipment needed in filtration are a filter funnel, filter paper and a conical flask. The large insoluble substances which are too big to flow through the holes of the filter paper are trapped and are called the residue. The smaller soluble solutes and solvent which flows through the filter paper and into the conical flask is called the filtrate. Crystallisation is used to separate salt from water. The water evaporates and the salt leaves the solution forming crystals. Wear eye protection to protect your eyes from the risk of salt crystals potentially spitting out as the solution is over heated.
