St Patrick's Day Parade, Waterloo Place, London, UK, 12th March 2023.
There is a large Irish community in London who celebrate St Patrick's day when it comes around each year. An estimated 50K people attended today's event.
St Patrick's Day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe (a social gathering with dancing and playing Gaelic folk music), and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.
Traditionally St Patrick's Day is on the 17th March but it was celebrated a few days early this year in London.
The parade started at Hyde Park Corner, then traveled through Piccadilly, Regent Street Saint James’s, Waterloo Place, Pall Mall, Cockspur Street and Whitehall. I hope you enjoy the footage and the craik!
PS There were a large number of South American dance groups in traditional national costume at the parade today which added to the spectacle and made for good video content. Not quite sure of the connection to Ireland but included the footage nevertheless!
In the background you can see the Florence Nightingale, Sidney Herbert and Guards Crimean War Memorial statues.
